Rain, Curves, and the Rocky Mountains

Day seven was scheduled to be a big day. Not only was I scheduled to log 326 miles today today, but I would also cross over the 2000 mile mark for the trip overall. I had a nice breakfast with Steph on the phone, and then caught up on some Facebook posts before I took off. I appreciate Rick Smith and Steph giving me some perspective of the trip. It is going to rain; deal with it. I am also going to minimize tragic battlefield sights to keep my spirits up. From here on out natural wonders only.

I also want to coin a new word. Sadgrey: To feel sad because you are hungry. I realized how little I had eaten during the day. I need to plan better. There are at times 100 of miles between gas and food. I needed a better plan.

I rose early and I looked at the weather forecast. I suited up to kick rain in the ass.

I sure do like staying at motels where I can park my bike right outside my door. Not only do I like being able to keep an eye on the motorcycle, but it sure makes loading up a lot faster in the morning. There’s not a lot happening in this town, very few restaurants, so I just did a camping breakfast in the motel and it worked perfectly. I hit the road looking for rain but anticipating the mountains.

The first 240 miles went very smoothly I stayed on schedule and stopped regularly for fuel, snacks, and hydration. You can see for miles out here and I could see rain all around me. Rarely did it catch me.

75 miles outside of glacier National Park I stopped at Subway to warm up and eat. There were some a few Indian Harley riders there who just from where I was going. It was nice to sit and chat with a few folks about motorcycle riding and they also gave me some advice and pointers about my visit.

As I turned onto to US 89 to US 2 West, I could see the North Rocky Mountains in full view. I could see the snow capped peaks and I was excited. The curved roads to West Glacier were outstanding. US 2 is a special road.

This is a camping night for me and I decided to camp at the Glacier KOA and boy is this place something else! I guess I don’t know if we could call it camping, but rather Glamping. There are fantastic facilities, amazing views of mountains, dog parks, swimming pools and a little restaurant serving breakfast and dinner. You set your tent up on a groomed sand box! This by far is the best camp ground I have ever been to. This place would shock my Grandpa Gray who loved to camp.

I quickly set up camp and everything is ready for the evening. Looking forward to a good nights sleep here in the mountain air.

Tomorrow I plan to ride a potion of The Road to the Sun (portions are closed due to snow) and also take a tour around some of the key scenic sites in the Glacier National Park. From there I’ll head to Spokane Washington. I’m keeping my mileage at around 266 miles. This will give me time to break camp and do some sightseeing.
